Cashless Hospitalisation: A Health Insurance Checklist for Indian Families
By ATTPL HEALTHCARE Editorial Team · · 2 min read
How to prepare for cashless treatment: network hospitals, pre-authorisation, exclusions and documents that avoid claim delays.
Why cashless matters
At the September 2026 medical value travel event, the Commerce Minister reportedly asked insurers and health-tech firms for more cashless payment options and faster reimbursements. For ordinary families too, smooth claims reduce stress at a difficult time.
Before you need it
- Read the policy wording for exclusions, waiting periods and sub-limits.
- Save the network hospital list and the insurer's helpline.
- Keep policy numbers, ID cards and the TPA details in one place.
- Declare existing conditions honestly at purchase.
At the time of admission
- Ask the hospital's insurance desk to send pre-authorisation.
- Provide ID, policy card and doctor's notes.
- For planned procedures, request approval in advance.
- Check what the insurer will not cover and the expected co-payment.
After discharge
Keep the discharge summary, bills and prescriptions. If cashless is denied, file a reimbursement claim within the stated time.
Understanding the policy before you need it
Key terms include sum insured, room-rent limits, co-payment, deductible, waiting periods for pre-existing conditions, sub-limits for specific procedures and exclusions. A room above the allowed category can reduce the payable amount proportionately, which surprises many families. Read the schedule and the policy wording, not only the brochure.
Keep a one-page summary of your policy on your phone and with a family member.
Planned versus emergency admission
For planned procedures, request pre-authorisation several days in advance so that the insurer has time to review. In emergencies, the hospital typically informs the insurer within a stipulated period after admission. Keep the policy card and photo ID at hand and ask the hospital's insurance desk to guide you.
If a claim is rejected or reduced
Ask for the reason in writing, check it against the policy terms and respond with additional documents if needed. Insurers have grievance redressal officers, and there is an insurance ombudsman for unresolved disputes. Keep copies of all communications and meet deadlines for reimbursement filings.
