How to Choose a Hospital: NABH Accreditation and Other Quality Signals
By ATTPL HEALTHCARE Editorial Team · · 2 min read
NABH accreditation, doctor credentials, infection control and transparency: a patient's guide to choosing a hospital in India.
Why it is hard
Patients usually choose hospitals under stress. A simple checklist makes the decision calmer and safer.
Quality signals
- Accreditation such as NABH, which sets standards for patient safety and processes.
- Qualified specialists with relevant experience in your condition.
- Clear price estimates and consent practices.
- Infection control and emergency readiness.
- Access to diagnostics and critical care on site.
- Willingness to give a written treatment plan and answer questions.
Red flags
- Pressure to decide immediately for a non-emergency.
- No written estimate.
- Vague answers about the doctor's role.
Use a second opinion
For major procedures, a second opinion from another specialist is normal and wise.
What accreditation actually checks
Accreditation standards examine processes such as patient identification, medication safety, infection control, emergency response, record keeping and patient rights. It does not guarantee an outcome, but it indicates that the hospital has systems and is audited against recognised standards. Ask the hospital which accreditations it holds and whether they cover the whole hospital or particular departments.
Check the accrediting body's website for the list of accredited hospitals instead of relying only on a banner.
The doctor matters as much as the hospital
Look for a specialist with experience in your specific condition or procedure. Ask how many such cases the doctor handles and what the typical recovery looks like. Meeting the doctor, rather than only a counsellor, helps you judge communication and trust.
Prices, billing and emergencies
Ask for a written estimate and the hospital's billing policy for extra days or complications. Know the emergency number, whether the hospital has an ICU and blood bank and how quickly specialists are available at night. Keep your insurance details and ID ready.

Frequently asked questions
Does accreditation guarantee the best outcome?
No, but it indicates the hospital follows recognised safety and process standards.
Are smaller hospitals worse?
Not necessarily. The right match between condition, doctor and facility matters more than size.
